Success Begins with Believing

Success Begins with Believing
by Jack Canfield, America’s Success Coach

In a previous edition of Success Strategies, I talked about how in order to be successful, we must first define what success means to us, and that means getting CLEAR about what you want, writing it down, and thinking BIG!

If you are going to be successful in creating the life of your dreams, you have to believe that you are capable of making it happen. You have to believe you have the right stuff, that you are able to pull it off. You have to believe in yourself. Whether you call it self-esteem, self-confidence, or self-assurance, it is a deep-seeded belief that you have what it takes - the abilities, inner resources, talents, and skills to create your desired results.

Ultimately, you must learn to control your self-talk, eliminate any negative and limiting beliefs, and maintain a constant state of positive expectations.

Control Your Self-Talk
Researchers have found that the average person thinks as many as 50,000 thoughts a day. Sadly, many of those thoughts are negative — I’m not management material… I’ll never lose weight… It doesn’t matter what I do, nothing ever works out for me. This is what psychologists call victim language. Victim language actually keeps you in a victim state of mind. It is a form of self-hypnosis that lulls you into a belief that you are unlovable and incompetent.

In order to get what you want from life, you need to give up this victim language and start talking to yourself like a winner — I can do it… I know there is a solution… I am smart enough and strong enough to figure this out… Everything I eat helps me maintain my perfect body weight.

You Are Always Programming Your Subconscious Mind
Your subconscious mind is like the crew of a ship. You are it’s captain. It is your job to give the crew orders. And when you do this, the crew takes everything you say literally. The crew (your subconscious) has no sense of humor. It just blindly follows orders. When you say, “Everything I eat goes straight to my hips,” the crew hears that as an order: Take everything she eats, turn it into fat and put it on her hips. On the other hand, if you say, “Everything I eat helps me maintain my perfect body weight,” the crew will begin to make that into reality by helping you make better food choices, exercise, and maintain the right metabolism rate for you body.

This power of your subconscious mind is the reason you must become very vigilant and pay careful attention to your spoken and internal statements. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize they are committing negative self-talk, which is why it is best to enlist another person — your success partner — in monitoring each other’s speaking. You can have a signal for interrupting each other when you use victim language.

Use Affirmations to Build Self-Confidence
One of the most powerful tools for building worthiness and self-confidence is the repetition of positive statements until they become a natural part of the way you think. These “affirmations” act to crowd out and replace the negative orders you have been sending your crew (your subconscious mind) all these years. I suggest that you create a list of 10 to 20 statements that affirm your belief in your worthiness and your ability to create the life of your dreams.

Of course, what to believe is up to you, but here are some examples of affirmations that have worked for others in the past:

I am worthy of love, joy and success.
I am smart and make wise choices.
I am loveable and capable.
I create anything I want.
I am able to solve any problem that comes my way.
I can handle anything that life hands me.
I have all the energy I need to do everything I want to do.
I am attracting all the right people into my life.

Believing in Yourself is an Attitude
Believing in yourself is a choice. It’s an attitude you develop over time. It’s now your responsibility to take charge of your own self-concept and your beliefs. It might help to know that the latest brain research now indicates that with enough positive self-talk and positive visualization combined with the proper training, coaching, and practice, anyone can learn to do almost anything.

You must choose to believe that you can do anything you set your mind to - anything at all - because, in fact, you can!

Balance Transfer Fees: The Latest Credit Card Dirty Trick

By Lawrence D. Goldberg, The Credit Card Magician

Credit Card Companies have started playing a new dirty trick. Low interest rate balance transfers can be very effective in reducing your interest costs. However, there are deceptive provisions in some of these offers which can result in you paying several times the advertised “low” interest rate.

Advertising for Visa and Mastercard might tell you that some things are priceless, but everyone knows that banks and credit card companies have a hidden agenda when it comes to their customers: to siphon money from your bank account into their bank account. While there are many ways they accomplish this, there is a new trend that is particularly deceptive: excessive balance transfer fees.

As you might expect, the marketing “pitch” to use these low promotional rates sounds great. I just received one from Washington Mutual with balance transfer checks entitling me to “1.99% through November 2008.” This appeared to mean that if I borrowed $10,000 at 1.99% by using the balance transfer, my total interest cost for the entire nine months would be under $150. Sounds like a great deal, right?

And it would be an excellent offer if not for one little thing, which can be found in the paragraph following the one line offer of 1.99% in bold type. Several lines down that following paragraph are the following words: “…a Cash Advance Fee of 5% ($10 minimum) per check will apply.” To the credit of Washington Mutual, this information is not hidden in lightly printed six point type somewhere on the back page of the offer. That being acknowledged however, the “cash advance fee” is roughly two and one half times the interest rate of the offer.

So, it would appear that you are paying 7% for $10,000 for nine months, which comes to $525. But even that is not accurate, because the 5% cash advance fee is charged up front as a “finance charge” and you end up paying interest on it as well as on the $10,000 loan!

The way this works out is that 5% on $10,000 is $500. That is added to your loan, so your total amount owed is now $10,500. You then pay 1.99% interest on the whole thing. The net result is that you will pay closer to $650 in interest for the nine months on the $10,000, which comes to an annual interest rate of over 8.5%!

Now if you are paying double digit interest on your credit card debt, you might still want to take advantage of an offer like this. Low promotional rate balance transfers can do wonders to reduce the cost of your credit card debt and help you pay it off faster, if you choose the right offers and manage them effectively. However, before accepting any low promotional rate or balance transfer offer, be sure to work out the math to determine whether it is a move that makes sense for you.

WANT TO GET PROACTIVE ABOUT GETTING RID OF YOUR DEBT?

It’s Time to Get Rid of Your Debt. Here’s How…

Another year has passed and it is a time for reflection and planning for a new year. If you are like me, one of your New Year’s resolutions may revolve around improving your finances and more specifically around debt. If your goal for 2008 is have less debt or no debt at all, then you are reading this at the right time? Why? Because this year you can actually achieve this resolution if you put a firm plan into action.

Lawrence Goldberg, the Credit Card Magician, recently shared his insights at one of JASI’s events during which time he shared some valuable tips and answered callers’ questions on debt reduction and elimination. If you missed the teleseminar, here is a quick recap of Lawrence’s valuable advice.

Q: I want to eliminate all of my debt. How do I get started?

A: To get started, first you must have the right mindset. First be thankful for your debt and what it has provided. What did you debt buy you? Did it pay for your children’s tuition? Did it provide you with a dream vacation with your spouse? Chances are you incurred debt to acquire or achieve something. The idea here is to focus on what your debt did for you that was positive. Once you have figured out what you debts provided, it is time to become bigger than your debt. Look at both your debt AND your assets. Know what you owe and what you have. If you have a lot of debt chances are you have a lot of stuff. By taking a look at the larger picture you can become bigger than you debt and put yourself in more powerful place.

Q: How can I pay off my debt when I am living paycheck to paycheck?

A: Know every detail about your debt and take a look at your assets. It’s not a zero sum game. Here are a few tips to try out.

  • Try going frugal for a month to figure out lifestyle changes that affect spending. For example, instead of spending money on a gym membership, exercise outside.
  • Try lowering the interest rates of your credit cards. Your minimum payments will put more money towards your principal and less towards interest.
  • Figure out how you can increase your cash flow to pay down your debt. Search for a higher paying or second job or take another look at your assets. You may have assets that you can sell.

Quick Tip: Read the chapter on going frugal for a month in the Maxed Out Credit Card Game for more tips.

Q: Is debt consolidation a waste of time and money?

A: If bankruptcy is your only option, then debt consolidation may be for you. However, be wary of bad operators particularly on the internet. There are a few consolidators that work with credit card companies, but it will devastate your credit. Consolidation rates are usually around 8-10% so treat it as a last resort. Instead transfer your balances. You can get your interest rate down to 4% or less.

Quick Tip: Read Balance Transfer Magic to learn more.

Q: How can you win with credit card companies?

A: Credit card companies are masters at screwing around with you. Before committing to the great 0% limited time offer, read the fine print and work out exactly what you are getting yourself into. There are many ways to take advantage of their opportunities. You just have to know how to play the game.

Quick Tip: Spring is usually the best time for good offers. Even if they are not great, it may be better than where you are now.

Have You Looked At Your Business Plan Lately?

By Karen McFarlane

The holidays are coming so Get Jazzed Up! It’s a great time to catch up with family members, call old friends, and plan for the New Year! This is an especially good time for you to analyze 2007 and make a list of what you need to shape up by the time midnight hits on December 31st. While I am not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions, I do like the fact that everyone focuses their attention on making personal improvements to their lives. But have you also focused your attention to making improvements to your business by updating your business plan.

Every entrepreneur should have written a business plan before they opened the doors on their business. If you haven’t then you are a serious risk taker. How many people would you invest in without some sort of written account of how that money would be spent and later returned? However, for the savvy business owners that have invested their time and energy into crafting a viable written plan, it’s time to take a moment before the year is up to revisit it and analyze how your company is living up to your original promises.

Remember that your business plan is your roadmap to success. It forced you to think through every aspect of your enterprise from product development to finance. You wrote down how you would achieve these goals and provided a detailed account of your tactics and milestones. That was great work. So why did you abandon it?

Committing your thoughts to paper was the first step in making a commitment to yourself and the viability of the business. However, your plan is organic and is meant to continuously stimulate your thinking. So let’s do a checkup and honestly assess where you are. Here are a few areas to focus on:

  • About Us. Are you living up to your original description? Are you falling short or have you become more that what you initially envisioned for yourself. Perhaps your original vision was too ambitious or there were changes in the market that affected your competitive advantage. Or maybe, you are right where you need to be! Take a hard look at who you are and make sure your goals are aligned with where you want to be.
  • Mission Statement. Are you putting your purpose into practice? Perform an honest analysis and ask yourself if your activities, tactics, goals and employees supporting this mission. If not, adjust.
  • Competitive Analysis. Are your competitors the same as they were a year ago or have new ones popped up? Now that you are hands-on you may have discovered other challenges that were not originally considered in the plan. Remember, to expand your competitive focus too. If you sell DVDs, your direct competitors could also be video game retailers. While your product may be different, you are competing for the same attention from similar audiences.
  • Products/Services: Are you still selling the same thing? Have you added to your inventory or have you decided to package your products differently? Update this section along with price points. These changes may inform changes in your marketing plan throughout the year or impact your budget.
  • Marketing Strategy: Are your marketing plans effective? Changes in the competitive landscape may have required adjustments or opportunities arose that you were able to capitalize on. Marketing is a process of discovery which is part art and part science. Whichever tactics you decide to execute, measure their effectiveness and adjust accordingly. It might take you a while before you find the right marketing mix for your audience. Also, make sure you got your audience right! Are you messaging to your target or is your audience skewing in a different direction?
  • Budget: Reassess your finances. Are you spending more or less than anticipated? What is your return on investment? Depending on the results, you may need to adjust your allocations. For instance, if a particular marketing tactic is yielding positive results, you may want to consider committing additional funds to the effort. If sales are up then you may need to staff up to support the growth. And if you find that you aren’t making the money you projected, it’s time to take a hard look at your entire business plan again. Perhaps there was flaw in your thinking that can be corrected for 2008 or perhaps the idea was a good try, but just not financially viable.

I applaud all those that had the discipline to work through all of the possibilities and plan for their success in advance. In fact, that is the purpose of the plan - to force you to think and plan for success. Continue to use it to regularly inform your thinking and share it with your colleagues. Sometimes a fresh pair of ideas and an objective point of view can open your mind up to things you never considered before After all, you put so much effort into crafting it – you might as well make the most out of it by using it everyday!

Get Past Your Money Issues

by Karen McFarlane

What is the one thing you always feel like you don’t have enough of? You got it - MONEY! We all want more money. First, let me say that it is perfectly okay to want more money. Money makes it possible for you to pay your bills, buy nice things and then create more bills so you can buy nicer things. It’s a game that we all play. Yes, we venture out and give to charities. We invest in businesses and some money we just plain give away for no good reason – much like the interest we pay to credit card companies. However, have you really analyzed how much money you WANT versus how much money you really NEED? Honestly, do you really NEED all that money you claim you want? The answer is “not really.” So let’s X out the whole “Need Excuse”- shall we?

Check this out! If you had all the money you ever wanted, what would you do with it? Whenever I ask this question, I always get the same answer…”anything I want.” So when I ask the follow up question, “what is it that you want? Invariably, I hear the same laundry list of material items with varying detail. “I want to quit my job and travel the world.” “I want to buy a new car, a better house, and new clothes, etc.” The list goes on. So do you see what I mean? All we WANT are brighter, newer, shiner things!

Again, there is nothing wrong with bright, shiny and new. After all, a 2 carat princess cut diamond ring would look absolutely fabulous on my finger right now. However, it begs the question, do we really want the THING or do we really desire the feeling we get from that THING? Take a moment. Soak that in.

What we truly WANT is the security we get from having a plush bank account. We want the status we get from driving a fancy car or having a luxurious home. I want to feel absolutely fabulous with a 2 carat rock blinding people from a mile away. But I don’t need it. That ring will never determine my worth – although I probably could sell it later for a nice piece of change!

The truth is we are very affected by the societal factors present in our universe. We are creatures that desire approval from our fellow beings and sometimes that approval comes at a high cost. Talk about your debt to society! Unfortunately, we want what others have because for some reason what we already have just isn’t enough.

So here is my question for this week. How much is enough? How much would it really take to make you happy and why? I am not here to judge that choice, but rather to help you acknowledge it. Maybe then you can focus your efforts on trying to attain it for the real reason you truly want it and stop pretending that you actually need it to move forward with your life.

Dr. Spaghetti, the people need to see you now.

David EllzeyBy Karen McFarlane

Did I capture your attention with the title? Good. That was the point. However, Dr. Spaghetti isn’t a metaphor or figment of my imagination. He is as real as you and me. Dr. Spaghetti happens to be the alternate persona of David Ellzey, an accomplished actor, mime and clown for the Big Apple Circus where his winning performances put smiles on the faces of terminally ill patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. So what does this have to do with you? Hold on a second…you’ll soon find out.

Dr. Spaghetti, a.k.a. David Ellzey is also an accomplished international teacher of the Sedona Method sharing his personal approach to life coaching with willing participants across the globe. In my previous article, God, Please Let Me Feel, I gave you a brief introduction as to how The Sedona Method works. Now, I will introduce you to a phenomenal teacher of the Method who can help you put it into practice.

So who is David Ellzey?

I had the pleasure of meeting David when he led the JASI hosted Sedona Method seminar last week. As a gifted business and life coach, David imparted valuable words and concepts regarding The Sedona Method through the use of metaphors and physical humor. We laughed. We played. We reflected on our own lives. Best of all, we were able to open up to our feelings and for a brief moment catch a glimpse of how the Sedona Method could make a real impact on our lives.

I believe one of David’s best attributes is born from his 30 years as a professional actor and entertainer. His personal stories coupled with his ability to invoke humor broke down barriers and prepped our minds to be open to his message. Moreover, his innate ability to capture your attention while providing very valuable, actionable information speaks volumes to his audience.

In sum, it is his contention that through the thoughtful and deliberate action of understanding your emotions you can adjust your reaction to the stimuli that directly affects how you respond to life’s challenges. This is the basis for the Sedona Method which can be used to eliminate fears, relieve stress, remove self-doubt from you consciousness and subconscious; and ultimately help you cope with daily obstacles. In doing so, you become more open to your own purpose and can share your best attributes with others.

While his Big Apple persona may seem a bit amusing to you, it is simply a method of reaching people through laughter and emotion. As Dr. Spaghetti, David has channeled his ability to entertain to bring laughter to terminally ill patients. As David Ellzey – the teacher - he has channeled that same ability to give you the gift of knowledge and self awareness.

I invite you to find out more for yourself. If you have a sincere interest in learning more about The Sedona Method, tap into David’s energy. Here’s a checkpoint. If David can put smiles on people with a very slim chance of making it through the next day, then doesn’t it stand to reason that he has a very good chance of helping you move forward with your own life?

See for yourself. Visit www.davidellzey.com to learn more.

Let Me Reintroduce you to…Faith!

Faith sees the invisible. Faith believes the incredible. Faith receives the impossible.

- Angela Reimma, Founder, Harmonic Health, Inc.

There are many forces at work in our universe, but you have the power to control the ones that affect you by trusting yourself and your direct relationship to the universal principles that shape your reality. You deserve all the wonderful things you dream about, but you are also responsible for obtaining them. However, in order to start your journey, you must take the first key step to making them a reality. The great part about this journey is that you don’t have to go it alone. You already have a traveling companion. In fact, she has never left your side. The problem is you have ignored her for the most part of your life. Centuries of written and oral tradition have mentioned her. She has many names, but her universal name is well known. Let me reintroduce you to Faith.

Ahhh…Faith. Do you remember her now? You have neglected her and questioned her validity, but by doing so you are losing a great ally. Faith is wonderful. Faith is all-knowing, all-caring and all-believing. Faith is your best friend, key supporter and cheerleader. Why would you abandon someone whose loyalty brings you the greatest rewards? Remember, Angels’s quote?

  • Faith sees the invisible. You don’t have to see it, because Faith sees it for you. Faith has a window into your mind and will deliver based on her direct connection with the powers that be.
  • Faith believes the incredible. There is nothing that Faith deems to be ridiculous or absurd. If you KNOW deep down that you are deserving, then by having Faith by your side, you will get what you deserve.
  • Faith receives the impossible. Faith’s mind has no limitations. Only man’s mind does. Tell Faith your story and Faith will be the ghost writer of your life publishing a reality that you can see and feel.

Some people may find it difficult to believe in that which they cannot see. But Faith is there to help you believe. Why don’t you invite her back into your life and sit her down for a good talk? It just might turn out to be the best conversation of your life.

God, please let me feel…

Excerpts from The Sedona Method: Special Preview TeleseminarBy Karen McFarlane

David Ellzey, professional life and business coach, hosted a recent teleseminar for Joy and Success International in which he shared some of the secrets of the Sedona Method. The Sedona Method has been used by over 1/3 of the teachers featured in the best selling movie, The Secret, and has had a timeless effect on those that have embraced its principles and put them into daily practice.

 THE SEDONA DIFFERENCE

One of the main principles that the Sedona Method deals with is the acknowledgement of the pain and frustration that is created by the things we desire in this world. In effect, Sedona encourages you to welcome the negative feelings like sadness and anger that will occasionally bubble in your subconscious as natural rather than unnatural. It’s okay to feel sad and it’s okay to be angry. In essence, it’s okay to feel – anything.

Ellzey says that emotions are a natural part of our existence. They go up and down like the waves of the ocean and rather than push against them, we should travel deeper into what lies beneath. What is under the constant frenzy of the waves is a stillness and calmness that is more peaceful and pleasant to our souls. Unfortunately, most of us live within the waves on the surface of the ocean in a constant fight against their awesome energy.

By acknowledging that having both pleasant and unpleasant emotions is part of who we are, and then by welcoming them and letting them into a calmer place, we can achieve harmony. It is at this moment, when you let go of the emotional content that is victimizing you that you will have the power to move forward and change or simply just let it be.

So what is the Sedona difference? The Sedona Method is about uncovering the natural compassion and beauty of our souls and less about new thinking. It focuses on how to unlock the elements that control our emotions and finding ways to move past them. In doing so we have the power to make a mental shift in how we define our place in this world.

WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT?

Every emotion is triggered by three fundamental “wants.” The Sedona Method says that by finding the trigger that is driving that emotion, you can unhook its power over you. The three triggers are as follows:

  1. WANTING SECURITY: This is your animal instinct otherwise known as your survival instinct in action. As such, we live with this constant sense of fear, wanting to live safely and wanting to live securely without really knowing that we are acting on this fear to our own detriment.
  2. WANTING CONTROL: This is our need to control certain aspects of our life including the people around us. We live with the notion that if others would just be like us or think like us, then we will be happy. However, this causes our greatest pain because the universe doesn’t function in this manner.
  3. WANTING APPROVAL. This is our simple yet all powerful desire to be loved. We live with the notion that if we gain approval then we will be safe. This manifests itself in various ways such as controlling how we look, the way we talk, how we act and ultimately how we feel.

MAKE THE SHIFT

In light of learning about the three wants, we can reflect on what it would be like to be free of the hold they have over us. What if you were secure with your own decisions and didn’t need anyone or anything to validate those choices? What if you could operate independently without fear of loss? What if you were completely secure with where you are in life right here, right now and where you wanted to be in the future?

The key to making this mental shift happens in the moment you make the realization that it exists.

  1. DISCOVER THE FEELING: What is it that is bothering you?
  2. ADMIT THE WANT. Which “wants” are triggering this feeling?
  3. LET IT GO: Consider letting the want go and being free of the wanting in this moment, right here, right now.

As you go through this process notice what its like to let the want go just for this one second, and then the next second, and then the next. Consider being in this moment free of this wanting just now, and now and then now. Take one moment at a time. Do you find yourself feeling more peaceful?

This change can only happen in the present. As Ellzey says, “the past is memory. The future is a projected occurrence and the present is the feeling you are having now. That is why you have the power to change it.” How does it feel to know that you can change the future, by simply altering how you feel about it in this very moment?

 RELAX. RELATE. RELEASE.

While the Sedona Method is far from simple in practice, it is a good lesson in control. You are your own master and you are completely in command of who you are now and who you want to be tomorrow. Ellzey says “Recognize the miracle of what is keeping you alive… Love yourself by not judging yourself…Don’t suppress the negative…and consciously uncover your true nature.”

Our greatest natural asset is our emotions. If we let go of pushing against them and just welcome them in, then we give them the opportunity to resolve themselves.  It is when we release the emotional shackles that cloud our thought, that we can find true clarity. Remember - it’s okay to feel – anything!
